Jean E. Wertz
August 16, 1923 – September 23, 2020
Jean E. Wertz, 97 years young, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at Broad Acres Nursing Home in Wellsboro, Pa.
Born on Thursday August 16, 1923 in Lewistown, Pa., Jean was the daughter of the late Carrie Anna Rebecca (Cruse) and Clarence K. Arnold. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas A. Wertz, Jr.; her son, Robert A. Wertz; and brothers, Clarence “Sonny” Arnold and Edward Thomas Arnold.
Jean graduated from Lewistown High School in 1941 and worked for two years at Mann Edge Tool Company. She married Thomas A. Wertz, Jr. in 1943 and were happily married for 48 loving years before Tom passed in 1991, living primarily in Lewistown, Bellefonte and Harrisburg. Jean was a member of Eastern Star and was a Star Points Officer. She and Tom were active in the Harrisburg Rock Club and enjoyed Rock Club Shows displaying pieces of jewelry created by Tom. She also enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, writing (and receiving) letters, camping trips with her family, several cruises with Tom, sewing and caring for others, never putting herself first. She was the ultimate care-giver, the consummate family manager, home economist, home engineer, homemaker, mistress and lady of the house, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and clearly the Matriarch of her family. Jean was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church in Lewistown, Bellefonte and for the last 50+ years the Calvary united Methodist church in Harrisburg, PA. Most importantly she lived and shared her faith by her example each day of her life.
Jean enjoyed a life filled with good deeds, humor, warmth and love that her family and friends were so privileged to share. She was dearly loved, will be greatly missed and her smile will never be forgotten.
She was incredibly proud of her family and is survived by her son Edward T. Wertz and his wife Carol (Clifton Springs, NY); daughter-in-law Kathy Wertz (Harrisburg, PA); 3 grandchildren, Jason (Pam) Wertz, Allison (Bill) Wellman, Cody (Brielle) Wertz; 9 great-grandchildren, Marlayna and Landon Wertz, Matthew and Marisa Delcour, Kyle, Jack and Olivia Wellman, Reed and Nora Wertz; her sister, Judith Ann Arnold Nelson (Canon City, Colorado) and several nieces and nephews.
Jean’s family would like to extend a very special thank you to Kim R. Hurlock and all those who enjoyed her presence and brightened her days while she resided at The Manor at Oakhurst in Harrisburg. They would also like to thank the staff at Country Terrace Assisted Living and Broad Acres Nursing Home in Wellsboro, Pa. for creating a safe, joyful, loving environment where Jean was included as part of their “family”. These, and many others, are people who work so very hard, touch many lives, and make the world a better place. Jean’s family will never forget their kindness and will always be grateful.
Due to health and safety concerns surrounding COVID-19, there will be no viewing or funeral service. A private burial will take place at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when we are able to safely gather and share our love for Jean and one another.
In Jean’s memory, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church, 4700 Locust Lane, Harrisburg, PA 17109 or a charity of your choice.
Please take a moment to remember Jean with a smile and lift our family in your prayers. Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand. “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23:8 Well done, good and faithful servant. And the people said “Amen.”
